Over 200 High Peak students attend Cheadle & Marple College – as my own older children did – so I know just how important the college is, especially after New Mills Sixth Form closed. Sixth forms have seen cuts of between 20% and 30% of their funding so it’s very sad to see them berated for financial mismanagement and needing to close or be bailed out.

I had already requested to meet the leaderships of both Cheadle & Marple and Trafford College Group to protect the interests High Peak students in the merger. We need to keep travel bursaries and accessible courses for High Peak students and that’s what I’m fighting for – as a mum who knows, as well as a candidate who cares about getting the best education for High Peak’s young people.

Ruth George, Labour's Champion for High Peak

“There has never been such a huge difference between the political parties and the future they offer. I want people in High Peak to know that there is a better alternative than a government which is about to close nearly 20 hospitals, cut £3 billion from our schools, plunge over 4 million working families into poverty through their harsh cuts to Universal Credit and refuses to rule out cuts to pension increases or higher tax and national insurance. In contrast, I will promote Labour’s message of long-term investment in public services, fairness for working people, and decent support for pensioners and those who cannot work.”
